TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Those who know and worked with Curtis Reeves at the Tampa Police Department say Monday's deadly shooting at a Wesley Chapel theater is totally out of character for Reeves, who is charged with second-degree homicide.

The department released Reeves' personnel file today. The 363-page file is filled with awards and letters of commendation and praise.

Jim Diamond is the director of operations for the West Central Florida Police Benevolent Association and worked side by side with Reeves on the SWAT team.

"He and I were, I was sitting in the right front seat of one of our vehicles when we were getting shot at at a hostage scenario. Always steady, always made the right decisions," said Diamond.

Diamond says he finds it hard to believe this wasn't a case of self defense.

"Knowing him as I did and knowing his training and his background, and our work history, I believed and do believe that there must be something more to it than is initially out there in the public venue," he said.

Former Tampa Police Chief Bennie Holder had a similar reaction.

"A friend of mine called me and was telling me and I was shocked. Devastated," said Holder. "He was a great supervisor, I never saw him lose his cool, he was a great teacher. Very knowledgeable in the field of law enforcement."
