Severe weather leaves a path of damage across Triangle

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A line of severe weather passed over central North Carolina Saturday afternoon, taking down trees and knocking out power.

Duke Energy reported approximately 40,000 customers did not have power immediately following the storms which passed over Raleigh around 2:30 p.m. That number fell to just more than 11,000 at 7 p.m.

Wind gusts topped out at 86 miles per hour at RDU International which breaks the old record of 79 miles per hour set in Sept. 2004. The terminal sustained damage and several small planes were flipped when the record was set in 2004 but there have been no reports of damage from Saturday's storm.

A condominium complex under construction in the Brier Creek area was damaged by winds from the storm. The wooden structure on Bruckhaus Street appeared to be pushed off its foundation by winds.

The Red Cross is helping people who live in two separate mobile home parks that were damaged during the storm.

One of the mobile home parks is located on Dove Lane in Raleigh and the other on Reed Street in Cary.

"The Red Cross is going to put up these families in a hotel for two nights," said the Red Cross' Alan McKinney. "Then staff members will come in on Monday and look at additional assistance the families may have."

No one in those mobile homes were hurt.

Debris and trees littered roadways across the Triangle. Glenwood Avenue and Durant Road in Raleigh were closed following the storm due to downed power lines and trees.

Raleigh police said Durant Road could remained closed for several hours or possibly overnight.
