Bicycle rider struck, killed on State Road 70 in Arcadia

ARCADIA, FL (WFLA) - A 63-year-old DeSoto County man was struck and killed Friday night while riding a bicycle along State Road 70 in Arcadia.

Joseph Albert Adams was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. Investigators say Adams was attempting to cross the roadway in the 2700 block at the intersection near the Wal-Mart location.

When he did so, he veered into the path of a Ford Escort driven by 32-year-old Lisa Summerlin of Clarksville. She was unable to avoid the collision striking the right side of the bicycle. Adams was ejected onto the pavement.

Right behind Summerlin’s vehicle was a 2006 Scion driven by Edna Johnson. The 50-year-old Fort Myers resident also struck Adams. She did not stop and continued traveling east along SR 70.

Johnson was later located on the side of the road by a FHP trooper. She explained that her vehicle had broken down and she was going to get some help. Johnson was later identified as the driver of the second vehicle that fled the scene.

She was taken back to the crash site where she was arrested on a driving under the influence charge. Johnson was booked into the DeSoto County Jail and released after posting a bond of $500. She has not been charged with Adams death as the investigation continues.

Summerlin and a passenger in her vehicle were not injured. Johnson also did not suffer any injuries in the crash.
