CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) - Clearwater Police have identified the man suspected of using a machete to rob two stores.

Willie D. Collins, 48, is hospitalized at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Collins was injured Wednesday afternoon when he crashed his truck while fleeing from police. Investigators say officers were trying to pull Collins over for a traffic stop at the time.

Earlier in the day, police released surveillance video of two store robberies in which the suspect used a machete. Clearwater Police say they got a tip from someone who saw the surveillance video.

During the first robbery at the Dollar General store located at 1600 N. Myrtle Ave., the robber showed the clerk a 16-to-18 inch, long blade machete then took money from the register. During the second robbery at the Family Dollar at 1279 S. Missouri Ave, the robber lunged at the clerk and cut her with the machete.

Collins was charged with two counts of armed robbery and one count of fleeing and eluding. He will be booked into the Pinellas County Jail once he is released from the hospital.
