FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Fayetteville authorities are searching for a robbery suspect in the Cape Fear River after the suspect jumped into the water to get away.

As of Wednesday evening, the man had still not been found.

Fayetteville police received a report of an armed robbery around midnight Wednesday morning at the Kangaroo convenience store at 4000 S. Main Street in Hope Mills.

Officers were given suspect and vehicle information. Around 12:30 a.m., officers discovered a vehicle matching the description and conducted a traffic stop near the Fayetteville Police Department's Training Center at 675 N. Eastern Blvd.

During the traffic stop, a female passenger jumped out of the vehicle and the driver drove off. The female passenger was not injured and was taken into custody.

Police began a pursuit of the vehicle, which eventually ended on Medina Road. The man jumped out of the vehicle and officers began to pursue the man on foot in a wooded area.

During the search, the man jumped into the Cape Fear River and began calling for assistance. Two officers jumped into the river in an effort to save the suspect, but could not reach him.

Officers continue to search for the suspect by boat and by foot in surrounding wooded areas. The police department's dive team was scheduled to begin searching with sonar scans and dive operations Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Fayetteville detectives are currently investigating additional robberies that have been associated with this suspect and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The name of the suspect is currently being withheld pending positive identification and family notification.
