Walmart gift cards fraudulently used

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL - After buying Walmart gift cards for her husband's business contacts, Joyce Strickler says it was a bit embarrassing to find out one of the cards wasn't worth what she thought.

"She goes, don't think I'm ungrateful, and I'm not looking for anything in return, it's just, one of the cards I don't think was activated," Strickler recalls the California contact telling her husband.

Strickler says after some research and inquiry at Walmart, she discovered that card - bought at a store in Palm Harbor - had been activated but somehow used at a store on Gunn Highway in Tampa the next day.

It didn't make any sense to Strickler, who checked another $50 card she bought and found it only had a balance of $39.51.

After News Channel 8 inquired about the cards, Walmart started investigating the case.

A spokeswoman said Tuesday that Walmart will refund the money from the cards that appear to have been fraudulently used

Strickler says Walmart initially didn't refund her money, instead an employee told her she could ask a manager at the Gunn Highway store to pull surveillance video and file a police report.

"I put it on my credit card, Walmart got their money, the thieves, whoever took it, got their money," she said.

It's still unclear how the card numbers may have been accessed, but Walmart is investigating.

Strickler says she is going to pick up her refund at the Walmart on US Highway 19 in Palm Harbor on Wednesday afternoon.
