Sprint agrees to let customer out of contract after phones didn't work

CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) - Michael Manning recently switched his business phones from Verizon to Sprint. He says he depends on his phones to conduct his business at Discount Garage Door & Opener in Clearwater.

When a customer is stuck with a door that won't work, they call him, and he dispatches a technician to their house. But the new Sprint phones weren't always working, and that cost him money.

8 On Your Side profiled his story, and now he says Sprint agreed to let him out of his contract.

"I feel good," Manning said Tuesday. "I'm able to sleep at night. I'm not worried I missed a customer. I'm not worried my men aren't getting their jobs. It's a lot of stress taken off my shoulders."

Sprint spokeswoman Crystal Davis says the company is upgrading towers in the area and that's causing "minimal" problems for some customers. She said nesting birds on a cell phone tower are the cause of problems in parts of Polk County.

But dozens of customers have complained to 8 On Your Side, and the problems aren't isolated to one area or county. Davis says she'll research some of the specific complaints.
