KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) - Wind and near-zero temperatures hampered efforts by firefighters to extinguish a burning house in Kingsport.

The first call for help came around 6 p.m. from a home on the 1600 block of C Street.

Two women in the home escaped unharmed.

Flames spread without regard to firefighter efforts because of high winds and cold temperatures, the cause of massive sheets of ice around the fire scene.

Firefighters continued to spray water on nearby homes to keep the fire from spreading.

By 10 p.m., firefighters had the fire under control, said KFD spokesman Barry Brickey.

Homeowner Vicki Spino said she and her sister were in the home.    "I was just warming my feet by the space heater," Spino said.  "My sister was screaming through the house that something was on fire and to call the fire department."

The American Red Cross was assisting the homeowners Monday night.
