TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Former University of Florida star wide receiver Reche Caldwell was among eight people arrested by Tampa Police Sunday on gambling charges.

Caldwell, 34, also played in the National Football League for several seasons. He was charged with one count of operating a gambling house and one count of bookmaking.

He was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail and released just after 1 a.m. Monday after posting a bond of $4,000.

According to a Tampa Police Department report a court authorized search warrant was executed at 1746 West Main St. just after 3 p.m. Investigators say complaints had been received about an illegal gambling operation being conducted at that location.

Caldwell and two other men – Bobby Eugene Richardson and Kenlun Dawson – ran the operation the report states. Five other men were charged with illegal gambling and other crimes including violation of probation and illegal narcotics possession.

Police seized a significant amount of cash, two handguns and approximately one gram of an illegal substance – MDMA.

Caldwell was drafted by the San Diego Charges in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft following his senior year with the Gators. During his career he also played for the New England Patriots and Washington Redskins.

Caldwell signed a deal with the St. Louis Rams in March 2008 but was among the team’s final cuts in training camp. He retired from the game a short time later.

Richardson, a 37-year-old Tampa resident, and Dawson, a 35-year-old Tampa man, were both released Monday after posting a bond of $4,000.

The other men arrested and their charges are listed below:

- Rico Deangelo Longstreet, 31, Tampa, gambling and possession of a controlled substance.

- Bernard Rogers, 40, Tampa, gambling.

- Troyanoski Jones, 44, Tampa, gambling.

- Allen Rhodes, 42, Tampa, gambling.

- Dennis Robinson, 23, Tampa, violation of probation.

This is not Caldwell’s first brush with law enforcement in the Bay area. In 2011 he was arrested in Hillsborough County on marijuana possession and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license charges and in 2009 he was arrested on a domestic battery charge.
