Kids rejoice as NC schools announce 2-hour delays

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

School children around the area - and perhaps school employees who like to sleep in - rejoiced on Monday as many school systems, including Wake, Durham and Cumberland county, announced two-hour delays for Tuesday morning.

The delay will apply to all public schools. While local school systems are often jittery when snow and icy roads are possible, Monday's announcements still came as a surprise given the fact that no precipitation is expected.

A Wake County spokeswoman said she believes the last time schools in Wake County were delayed because of cold weather was 1976.

Also delayed for two hours Tuesday are:

  • Johnston County schools
  • Orange County schools
  • Harnett County schools
  • Chatham County schools
  • Moore County schools
  • Hoke County schools

Closings and delays

But the forecast is a low is a brutal one for a state where mild temperatures are the now. The weather could hit 10 degrees Monday night in Raleigh, which will break the record of 15 set in 1988.

Wake County mechanics scrambled to double-check buses Monday as the chill approached. Mechanics especially double-checked the batteries on buses and the air brake tanks, making sure there was no moisture in the system that might freeze and prevent the bus from moving.

School officials will be in early Tuesday to make sure heating systems are working.

While Monday's announcements were unusual, many parents took to WNCN's Facebook page to voice support for the school delays.

"It's too dangerous to put kids on a bus when black ice may be on roads. Wait til the sun comes up," wrote Tracey Evans Bucio.

"Grew up in MN, so did my kids until 1 1/2 year ago, so we are used to this type of cold. There were mornings that they stood in the -30 wind chills waiting for the bus. But, being that NC isn't used to this type of cold temps, it's probably a good idea," wrote Tracey Allen Jenkins.

And Maryrose Melito Kemp wrote, "For the kids that have to wait at the bus stop, of course it's a good idea."

But others weren't so sure.

"I think it is stupid. It is going to be cold all day," Michelle Evans wrote on WNCN's Facebook page.

"10 degrees at 7 a.m. and 12 degrees at 10 a.m., two-hour delay doesn't really accomplish anything," wrote James Daigle.

And Denise Manfredi said, "I don't see how they can even have 2 hours; the kids here don't have down coats and they think the buses are going to start? They should cancel it for whole day. Those kids can't be standing out there."

WNCN.com allows schools and organizations to update their closings and delays but there is an approval process. Please email cadams@wncn.com for information.
