A soldier from the Florida panhandle was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday.

The Department of Defense said Sgt. First Class William K. Lacey died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

The 38-year-old was from Laurel Hill, which is north of Fort Walton Beach near the Alabama border.

Lacey died Jan. 4, 2014 in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan when his unit was attacked by rocket-propelled grenades.

Lacey was assigned to 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Knox, Ky.
