SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Officers with the Sarasota Police Department mingled with residents Saturday afternoon during a block party.

The festive event took place on 23rd St. between Leon and Orange avenues and last for over two hours.

There was live entertainment, a bounce-house for the kids and free food. According to Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino the party/BBQ provided an opportunity for her officers to get to know the residents they serve.

“This type of event is the basis of community policing,” DiPino said. “This event is not to feed and entertain the criminals in the neighborhood. It is for the law abiding citizens who live there and want a safe community. It is designed for us to engage each other in a friendly environment. This will allow us to meet the neighbors, establish a personal relationship and build trust.”

Other city employees including Vice-Mayor Willie Shaw attended the event which was paid for by SPD. The department deemed the outing a success and hopes to have similar functions in the future.
