TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - On Monday afternoon Lovie Smith will be introduced as the 10th head coach in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. at One Buc Place.

Smith is already making an impact on the franchise as the team announced on Saturday that the new coach has already made his first hire. Jeff Tedford will be the Buccaneers new offensive coordinator.

Tedford, 52, served as the head coach at the University of California for 11 seasons (2002-12), reviving a program that had struggled over the previous decade and becoming known as developer of NFL talent, particularly on offense.

Cal produced 40 NFL draft picks during Tedford’s tenure, including eight who were selected in the first round. One could form the core of a very good NFL offense just from such former Cal Golden Bears currently playing in the NFL as Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch, Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson and Cleveland center Alex Mack.

“We are very fortunate to have Jeff as our offensive coordinator,” said Smith. “I have a great deal of respect for the job Jeff did at Cal for more than a decade and I believe he will be a great fit for what we are attempting to do in Tampa. Jeff has a successful and proven track record as a teacher and developer of young talent and I know our players, and the organization as a whole, will benefit from his experience.”

During his tenure with the Golden Bears Tedford led the team to seven consecutive bowl appearances. He also won more games than any coach in the history of the Cal football program. When he took over, the school had not had a winning program since 1993 and had won just 29 games over a nine-year span (1993-2001).

Tedford was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2004 and led the Golden Bears to a share of the 2006 Pac-10 Championship, the school’s first since 1975.

Prior to his time at Cal, Tedford worked as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oregon (1998-2001), helping the Ducks finish the 2001 campaign with a No. 2 national ranking. During his four years in Eugene, Oregon went 38-10, the best record in the Pac-10. During his first season as offensive coordinator, Oregon set then-school records in passing yards, total offense and points scored.

Tedford’s coaching career began with two seasons as a volunteer assistant at Fresno State (1987-88) before he joined the Calgary Stampeders (1989-91). He then returned to Fresno State in 1992, working as the quarterbacks coach, before adding offensive coordinator duties, a position he held from 1993-1997. While at Fresno State, Tedford helped tutor quarterback Trent Dilfer, who won the WAC Offensive Player of the Year award and was a first-round selection of the Buccaneers in 1994.

Tedford was a quarterback at Cerritos College, where he played for two seasons before transferring to Fresno State. While with the Bulldogs, Tedford set school records for passing yards (4,872) and passing touchdowns (35). Tedford spent six years as a quarterback in the CFL before beginning his coaching career. He and his wife Donna have two sons, Taylor and Quinn.
