According to a Longboat Key Fire Rescue report crews responded to a two-alarm fire at 2524 Gulf of Mexico Dr. just before 11:30 p.m. LKFR was assisted in the operation by the Sarasota County Fire Department, West Manatee Fire Rescue and Cedar Hammock Fire Rescue.

As firefighters were en route to the complex another caller to 9-1-1 indicated there was an explosion on the 13th floor and that smoke was emitting from a condo on the 12th floor.

The first unit to arrive found no smoke or flames but residents were seen exiting the building. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the 12th and 13th floors to investigate the source of the alarm.

Crews found smoke on the 12th floor but no fire. All residents were dispatched to the first floor as firefighters investigated. After a thorough search the fire was located in one unit on the 12th floor.

Forcible entry was made into six condos to ensure there was no extension of smoke and fire. The blaze was contained to an air/heating system within a 12th floor unit. All smoke was dissipated from the floor once the fire was extinguished.

The residents in that unit pulled the alarm when they first noticed smoke. It took crews less than two hours to restore order at the complex. An official cause of the fire is still under investigation and damage reports are not complete.

The maintenance personnel and property manager were on scene quickly and were instrumental in assisting the fire department with many aspects of the operation.
