Winter storm cancels, delays flights at TIA

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - A winter storm is impacting travelers in the Tampa Bay area.

Tampa International Airport reported Friday that it is still experiencing a high number of delays because of storms in the Great Lakes and the northeast.

As of 3 p.m., there have been 107 reported delays 52 departures and 55 arrivals, both averaging an hour-and-a-half of delay time.

In addition to the delays, there have been 45 canceled flights arriving to and departing from TIA.

Stranded travelers are passing time in the terminal.  "We're shopping. We're eating. We're over eating. We're waiting" said Tracey Stetler, delayed on a trip to New York City.

Her traveling companion doesn't think they will get a flight out soon.  "I think we might be in for a little bit of a surprise. We just called the kids and they say it's snowing really hard" said Richard Caires.

A TIA spokesperson says that delays are expected through Friday. If you need to pick up someone at the airport or if you are flying out, be sure to call ahead of time.
