ST PETERSBURG, FL -

St. Petersburg Police are investigating a shooting at a nightclub.

It happened around 2 a.m. Thursday at Club 1 South at 1838 1 Ave. S. Club goers say the place was packed for a New Year's Day party.  Police estimate at least 100 people were inside.

"Everything was kosher. People were having a good time," said Carter Fillyau. "I guess a fight or something broke out up by the dance floor. I don't know. And then we just heard a pow."

Fillyau says people started screaming and running for the door. The DJ announced not to panic because the noise came from some balloons that had popped.  Then, Fillyau says he heard more shots outside.

A St. Petersburg Police spokesman says when officers arrived, they found Alfred Whitehead, 27, outside suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.  Whitehead underwent emergency surgery at Bayfront Medical Center and is now listed in serious, but stable condition.

SPPD Spokesman Mike Puetz said no witnesses have come forward and no suspects have been identified.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in or around the club is asked to call Detective Rodney Tower at (727) 892-5008 or the police non-emergency number at (727) 893-7780.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
