TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Lovie Smith as their new head coach, according to reports.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reports the team is finalizing a contract to make Lovie Smith the tenth head coach in its franchise history.

Smith was the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2004-2012, where his teams had a reputation for strong defenses. In 2006, he coached the Bears to a Super Bowl appearance.

Smith is no stranger to the Buccaneers franchise. He was the team’s linebackers coach from 1996-2000 under coach Tony Dungy.

Dungy tweeted Wednesday night, “Congratulations to the Bucs. I think they made a very good choice in hiring Lovie Smith. Now I’m excited about watching the Bucs next year.”

This new hire comes on the heels of the firing of former head coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik.
