Former Gov. Spitzer and wife, who went to Meredith, divorcing

NEW YORK -

Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer and his wife, who went to Meredith College in Raleigh, say they are divorcing.

They made the announcement Christmas Eve when they said their "martial relationship" had come to an end.

The split comes more than five years after Silda stood by her husband's side as then-Gov. Spitzer resigned after he was exposed as a prostitution ring client.

But the two remained married, and Spitzer made another run for elective office this year as New York City comptroller.

But his wife did not campaign with Spitzer, and he lost the Democratic primary.

New York City tabloids have reported in recent weeks that the Spitzers were living apart.

The Spitzers were married in 1987 and have three children.  Silda Spitzer grew up in Concord, N.C. , and graduated from Meredith in 1980 and Harvard Law School in 1984.
