3 men rescued after boat fire near Sunshine Skyway

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL - Rescue crews pulled three men from the water near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge Friday night after their boat caught fire.

When St. Pete Fire Rescue arrived on the scene around 7:00 p.m., the 36-foot Irwin Gulfstar was fully involved.  A spotter was placed on top of the Skyway Bridge to assist in locating the three men on board the boat.  The men were found in the water by responders.

The three men were transported to O'Neill's Marina to be checked out by paramedics.  They are reported to be in their 40's or 50's.  Officials say two of three men have minor injuries.

A Coast Guard Helicopter was originally dispatched to assist in the rescue, but was canceled once St. Pete Fire Rescue reported that everyone was off the boat.

No hazardous waste was on board, besides the 45 gallons of diesel in the fuel tank.
