Posted: Updated:
Online retailer Amazon is trying to make amends to customers whose holiday orders were delayed by a shipping backlog.

Amazon emailed those affected by the shipping delay and offered an explanation citing "... failure in the UPS transportation network," according to a CNN report.

In the email, Amazon pledged to refund shipping costs and provide $20 gift cards to some shoppers.

CNN reports that UPS said the delays were due to a "perfect storm" of problems
wintry weather in parts of the country, a shortened shopping season between Thanksgiving and Christmas and a surge in online shopping.

An Amazon spokeswoman told the Chicago Tribune that orders were processed in time for Christmas on their end.

Amazon now says it plans to review its shipping partners' holiday performance, according to CNN.
