KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

A string of lights, a ring, and four little words. This Christmas Eve, one Kingsport woman got the surprise of a lifetime.

Bryan Upshaw surprised his future bride Danielle Voudrie Tuesday night when he popped the question in lights, with both of their families coming out of the bushes to document it.

Upshaw said it took a few friends and a few hours to construct the lighted question.

"I told her that I'd put up a bunch of extra Christmas lights, I wanted her to come out and see them," Upshaw said. "I walked her all the way to the end of the yard, turned her around and then all the extra Christmas lights were turned on and then there was a second delay and then my sister was upstairs and she plugged in the ‘marry me' with the question mark, then I  got down on one knee and asked her to marry me and she said yes."

"I was just like in shock, complete and utter shock. He surprised me, which is hard to do because I'm kind of nosey," Voudrie said.

She said she hardly slept that night because she was so excited, and when she woke up the first thing she did was check her left hand.

The couple met a year ago, and say they plan to be married by next summer.
