SAN FRANCISCO, CA (WFLA) - A puppy discovered in a San Francisco trash recycling facility over the weekend is expected to make a full recovery.

A trash sorter saw a poodle puppy coming down the sorting line amongst the trash. The puppy was in a bag.

The worker pulled the emergency cord to stop the conveyor belt.

"It was wet, it was bleeding, it was cut, it was in pretty bad condition," said Gregory Foster, a recycling facility sorter.

Workers cared for the pup until animal control came. They nicknamed it "Gem".

"The dog has some bite wounds and some conjunctivitis and she had some lameness in her legs she's under treatment by our veterinarian staff here and she's expected to make a full recovery," said Le-Ellis Brown of the San Francisco Animal Control Dept.

Trash sorters say the puppy was hauled by a garbage truck, dumped into a massive debris pile, scooped up by a tractor and loaded onto a shaker before it was dropped nine feet onto a sorting belt.

"It's a miracle dog, there's no other words to describe it," said recycling facility sorter Arturo Pena.

Animal control investigators are hoping to find the dog's owner. They want to know which of the dog's injuries happened before his harrowing journey.

If the dog's owner does not come forward, a new owner will be picked by lottery.

Hundreds of people have called to express interest in adopting Gem.
