A JC Penney store in the Westfield Brandon Shopping Mall was damaged by fire late Saturday night.

The blaze broke out at approximately 11:30 p.m. and crews with Hillsborough Fire Rescue battled it into Sunday morning.

According to a HCFR report several employees were inside when the fire started. They quickly exited the building and called for help. By the time crews arrived heavy smoke was emitting from the doors of the 148,000 square-foot store.

Firefighters entered the structure and quickly extinguished flames that were coming from behind an inside wall. Due to the size of the store and the large plume of heavy smoke produced by the fire a major ventilation operation was conducted with assistance from Tampa Fire Rescue.

It took three hours and 30 minutes for crews from both agencies to remove the smoke from the building while preventing it from penetrating other parts of the retail development.

The store sustained severe smoke and water damage especially on the first floor.

An investigation revealed the cause to be electrical in nature.

Members of the JC Penney management team were also called to the scene for an evaluation. The store will remain closed because of the incident but the rest of the mall was not affected and will remain open for business.

Fortunately nobody was injured.
