Pavel Kubina, a National Hockey League defenseman who played on the Tampa Bay Lightnings' team in 2004 when they won the Stanley Cup, announced his retirement Friday, NBC Sports reported.

Kubina who played in 970 NHL games, according to NBC Sports, said his time in NHL was a "dream come true."

The professional Czech player was drafted as 179th overall pick by the Bolts in 1996 NHL Entry.

Overall, the defenseman had 110 goals, 386 points, and 1,123 penalty minutes with Tampa Bay, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Thrashers, and Philadelphia Flyers, according to NBC Sports.

"Thank you to Phil Esposito for drafting me and giving me a chance to play for the Lightning," Kubina told the NHL Players' Association. "I also would like to thank my family and friends for their support throughout my hockey journey."
