HIGHLANDS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - The Highland County Sheriff's Office says a 14-year-old boy suffered a broken pelvis and a leg injury after he was hit by a train Tuesday afternoon in Avon Park.

The boy was hit by a northbound Amtrak train.  Investigators say he tried to run across the tracks in front of the train, and tripped.

A Sheriff's Office employee said the train came to a stop at the intersection of West Main Street and North Central Avenue.

The teen was airlifted from the scene.  The Sheriff's Office says he is in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital.
