Semi-paralyzed rabbit gets help from Tampa veterinary clinic

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - A semi-paralyzed rabbit has a new way to get around tonight, thanks to a contraption designed by a doctor at BluePearl Veterinary Partners and her husband.

The eight-year-old rabbit, named Charlie, had developed a chronic and progressive neck injury that prevents him from using his front legs.

Dr. Julia Shakeri, an avian and exotic medicine resident at BluePearl, and her husband, Gregg Raffa, a mechanical engineer with Connecticut Plastics, constructed a mobile carrier for Charlie on Monday evening.

The carrier, jokingly referred to as the "Bunny Buggy", is already allowing the rabbit some mobility, and has made eating and drinking easier.

Shakeri hopes that once Charlie becomes acclimated to the carrier, he will be able to move around even more successfully.

A release from BluePearl says Shakeri and Raffa plan to refine the mobile carrier, and are calling this "phase one."

BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa is one of nine recognized veterinary trauma centers in the nation.
