TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Once again, the Tampa Bay area will be in the spotlight before a nationwide audience.

On Monday, the College Football Playoff Committee announced Tampa will host the 2017 Playoff Championship Game. City and county leaders were joined by members of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission at a news conference announcing the new developments.

"Last week we were awarded the 2016 NCAA Frozen Four, and now today the 2017 College Football National Championship game," said Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan. "Thanks to Rob Higgins and the sports commission. It really is game day every day here in Tampa and Hillsborough County."

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn says the Bay area is on a roll.

"What I think it says is we're on fire. We really are on fire," said Buckhorn. "We're playing on the international stage. People know who we are, they know where we are. They know what kind of job we do with events like this. Whether it was previous super bowls, the RNC, Bollywood coming up this spring, so we're on everyone's radar. Not only from an economic standpoint, but knows how to host events and knows how to host them flawlessly."

Tampa beat out finalists Minneapolis, San Antonio, Jacksonville, South Florida and the San Francisco Bay area for the 2017 bid. Next year's game will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The Fiesta Bowl at the University of Phoenix Stadium will host the 2016 game.

The 2017 game is slated to take place at Raymond James Stadium on January 9th.
