ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon spent most of his Sunday at Tropicana Field but it wasn’t for baseball reasons.

Maddon - with assistance from team staff members and other volunteers - were making final preparations for his 8th Annual Thanksmas. The event begins on Monday and runs through Wednesday at Salvation Army shelters in St. Petersburg, Tampa and Bradenton.

The mass feeding will also make its way to the Sallie House in St. Petersburg and the Homeless Emergency Project in Clearwater.

It’s a labor of love for the Rays manager as he and his helpers put together a traditional Italian/Polish holiday feast for hundreds of needy citizens in the Tampa Bay region. Maddon, who purchases the supplies for the meal, also distributes clothing shoes to those who need it most.

Maddon’s Thanksmas has served over 6,000 individuals since its inception.

In 2012 - as a result of numerous donations from generous Rays’ fans and Maddon's tireless fundraising efforts - Thanksmas organizers also presented checks of $7,500 each to Salvation Army centers in St. Petersburg, Tampa and Clearwater and the Sallie House.

On Monday Maddon and crew return to Sallie House for their fifth consecutive year. The organization is a safe haven for children who have been removed from their home because of abuse, neglect or abandonment.

And by the way, it’s only 81 days until pitchers and catchers report to Port Charlotte for Spring Training – Go Rays!

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
