TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The ninth annual ‘Day of Dignity’ took place Sunday at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in Tampa.

The event – conducted by the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Project Downtown Tampa and several other organizations – provides free health and human services for the homeless population.

‘Day of Dignity’ is a nationwide campaign coordinated and sponsored by Virginia-based Islamic Relief USA. Last year’s campaign benefited more than 17,000 of the country’s homeless, providing for them food, clothing, school supplies, blankets, medical care and health screenings.

With approximately 50 million Americans living at or just above poverty level, ‘Day of Dignity’ creates the opportunity for those who are more fortunate to assist their needy neighbors. In this country there are at least 17 million children living in poverty and events such as the one at Riverfront Park provide youngsters with holiday presents they wouldn’t receive otherwise.

Similar ‘Day of Dignity’ gatherings occurred all across the country in cities such as Washington DC, Seattle, Fort Lauderdale, Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Dallas, Las Vegas and Phoenix.
