WESLEY CHAPEL, FL (WFLA) -

An 18-year-old New Port Richey man charged with stabbing a Pasco County teenager to death made his first appearance before a judge Saturday morning.

Circuit Court Judge W. Lowell Bray Jr. set Cleave Shevon Gittens’ bond at $100,000. He is facing one count of second-degree murder in the death of Tuvarrion 'Jay' Sirmons.

The 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead Friday afternoon at a Bay area hospital.

According to a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office report Gittens got into a verbal argument with the deceased at the Meadow Pointe II clubhouse in Wesley Chapel just after 3 p.m. At some point during the argument Gittens pulled a knife from his pants pocket and stabbed Sirmons twice.

The victim was not armed the report states. Sirmons was a Zephyrhills resident and attended Zephyrhills High School investigators say. The victim had also played sports with the Pasco County Police Athletic League.

Several witnesses to the incident say Gittens was the aggressor. He threw rocks at Sirmons and threatened to ‘kill him’ just prior to the stabbing.

This is not the suspect’s first brush with law enforcement in Pasco County. Gittens has a long list of juvenile arrests for a variety of crimes including possession of a firearm, burglary and drug-related charges.

He’s served approximately nine months total in the Pasco County Jail for his previous crimes. Gittens’ nickname is ‘Tip’ because he took money from a tip jar at a local eatery.

Grief counselors will be at Zephyrhills High School on Monday for students who knew and were friends with Sirmons.
