ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) - James Loney is returning for an encore season with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 29-year-old first baseman agreed to terms with the team on a three-year, $21 million deal according to published reports. The deal is contingent on Loney passing a physical and won’t be official until sometime next week.

The former first-round pick had a stellar season in Tampa Bay in 2013, hitting .299 with 13 home runs and 75 RBIs in 158 games. Loney’s signing means the Rays will have the same infield in 2014 as they did this year.

Tampa Bay made 55 fewer errors in 2013 than they did in 2012, finishing with second-best fielding percentage in the Major Leagues. Loney’s glove played a big role in the improved defense according to team officials.

In 2002 he was the Dodgers first round pick and spent 10 years with organization. He was traded to Boston in August 2012 in a deal that sent former Ray Carl Crawford and several other high-profile players – Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto – to the West Coast.

Loney signed a one-year deal with Tampa Bay in the winter of 2012. He is a lifetime .285 hitter and has a .761 OPS during his career.
