Kindness Day collects donations from a giving community

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Friday was a day of giving at News Channel 8.

It marked the fifth annual Kindness Day for WFLA TV.  Kindness Day benefits four local charities.

The Rough Riders collect new Teddy Bears as part of the John Winter Teddy Bear Round Up.  Rough Riders give out the bears throughout the year.

Diane Patterson jammed a Mini-Cooper with new bears.  It's the second year in a row that she has dropped by to make a donation.

"Well, I've been collecting this year with my daughter and we collected 65 of them," said Patterson.

There was just enough room for her to drive the small car.  She took on filling the car from top to bottom as a challenge.

"Last year somebody asked how many I could fit in the car when I pulled up, so this year, I thought I'd try it out," Patterson said.

The Marine Corps Reserve filled up a seven ton truck with new toys.  Corporal David Brooks says Kindness Day is something he enjoys doing.

"It's important because there are a lot of families in the area who are not able to provide a good Christmas for their kids, so this gives us an opportunity to give back to the community," said Brooks.

Feeding America Tampa Bay was on hand, collecting non-perishable food items to give to people in need.  Florida One Blood brought out their Blood Mobile to collect donations.

Clowns from Ringling Brothers Circus waved at cars as they drove by.  Cheerleaders from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers smiled, waved and posed for photos.

"Buccaneer Cheerleaders having been doing this since it opened, so about four years ago. It's been a great experience, people donating toys for the kids and everyone is in good holiday spirits so it's a really great time," said Bucs cheerleader Ingrid Aleman.

A sudden lurch in a creeping landslide in the northwest Wyoming resort town of Jackson split a house in two and forced workers to abandon efforts to stabilize the hillside.
No one can say precisely when the mountainside collapsing into this Wyoming resort town will give way. But it appears increasingly likely that when it does, it's going to take a piece of Jackson with it.
