Auto registration cost would drop under proposal

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - The cost of registering a vehicle in Florida would drop under a new proposal from Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott says is proposing cutting $400 million in taxes and fees, dropping the cost of registering a vehicle by about $25. Under the proposal, the cost of registering a car in Florida would decrease from about $71 to about $46, according to the proposal.

Scott says the plan will roll back a 54-percent increase in motor vehicle registration costs that went into effect in 2009.

"It was never government's money, it's your money," said Scott, who made the announcement in Tampa on Thursday afternoon.

Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, now a Democrat who is running for his old job, called the plan "a great idea" but said it should have happened sooner.

"When the auto fees went into effect, we were in the middle of the great recession so we needed it to balance the books and balance our budget," Crist said. "It was never intended to be permanent."

Scott's proposal calls for the lower taxes and fees to go into effect in September, but the final numbers could depend on what happens with the plan in the state legislature.
