WASHINGTON COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -

Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal calls one of his deputies a hero after the sheriff says he rescued a woman from a vicious attack.

It was the deputy's quick thinking and a strong cell signal that saved a woman's life.

Investigators tell us early this morning, a woman , the victim of an alleged rape, managed to call 911 and left the line open.

"The young lady knew something was out of the ordinary, so she actually dialed 911 when they turned on to Cash Hollow," said Washington County, TN Sheriff Ed Graybeal.
Dispatchers attempted to speak to the woman, but all they heard were the sounds of distress and panic. So dispatchers started to trace the call.
"We knew what we were going to and officer Collins knew what he was going to," said Graybeal.
Once 911 was able to pinpoint the call Deputy Collins didn't waste any time. He pulled up on the vehicle where the assault was happening and opened the door. He found the suspect on top of the victim. So he grabbed him and yanked him out. Once the suspect was on the ground, he began to resist arrest, so Collins tazed him.
"The young lady was in much distress. She was a little blue. We don't know what would've happen if Darrell had got there," said Graybeal, "when you turn that phone on, we are able to in emergency situations to ping that phone."

It's the GPS technology built into modern day phones, that saved a woman's life.

Alegria is in jail tonight on a $50,000 bond.
We now know that the victim is out of the hospital.

An attack on a woman was interrupted by a Washington County deputy who was able to locate the victim via her cell phone.
According to a news release from Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal, Carlos Enrique Alegria, 27, 204 Wilson Ave., was charged with aggravated rape and resisting arrest.
Deputies went to 542 Cash Hollow Road on a report of a rape. Deputy Darrell Collins found a rape in progress in a vehicle that was pulled off to the side of the road.
During the attack, the victim was able to dial 911 and leave the line open, which allowed 911 dispatchers to locate the general area via the pinging phone.
Collins stopped the attack and took Alegria into custody.
The victim was taken to the hospital and released.
Alegria was scheduled to appear in Sessions Court Friday.
