ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) - The Advanced Academics class at Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School, doesn't look like a class at all. The students work in groups, laughing, and collaborating.

"We're making certain continents so we can learn about the government," said eighth grader, Tyler Maly. "It gives you a chance to actually learn about stuff and not just read text books."

The class includes a lot of hands on learning. Students get to dabble in art and technology, even robot building. The materials are tough to come by at Thurgood. The Principal, Dr. Solomon Lowery, says one of his goals at the school is to make technology a staple in the classroom.

"Technology is the face of the future," Lowery said. "If our students don't have access to that it puts us at a disadvantage."

The Principal was shocked and excited when his business partners, the Home Shopping Network, announced they were donating $100 thousand to the school for technology.

"I was floored," Lowery said. "I thought someone was playing a late April Fools joke on me."

But it was real. The money from HSN will go to the Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) program. The new supplies will hit classrooms in the spring.

"We certainly at HSN know the value of technology," Sarah Miller, with HSN, said. "To be able to come to our adopted school and make an investment in technology, in the future of the students, was a perfect partnership."

Maly says as long as technology is involved, she doesn't mind showing up for class.

"You make it more like the real world and not just like class."
