Fla. power company gives away free Christmas trees, lights

Posted: Updated:
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - Some families in Bradenton got an early Christmas gift Wednesday night.

Florida Power & Light teamed with the Boys & Girls Club to give away 200 Christmas trees to families.  FPL did a similar giveaway in Miami last year.

"You think about a house that wants to celebrate Christmas in the traditional way and they can't.  Now they can," said Marc Dosogne, the CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County.  "It's nice to see these families going home with smiles and know that it's going to start the season for them."

Rodney Thompson was one of more than a dozen who lined up at the gates to make sure they would get a tree. He came an hour beforehand. In the spirit of giving, the tree was not even for him.

"I came for a single mother and her 10-year-old daughter so they could have a nice Christmas. She's at work and her daughter's at after-school care," Thompson explained. "I just think everybody deserves a nice Christmas."

FPL also gave away LED lights to those families.

"Usually LED lights are a little bit pricier up front but they last 10 times longer... and they're also 90 percent more efficient than your traditional lights," said Florencia Contesse, spokeswoman for Florida Power & Light.

FPL also suggests that you turn off fans when you leave a room.  They say preventing just one fan from running 24 hours can save you more than $7 a month.  Another tip: avoid metal cookware in the kitchen.

"For the same recipe - you can actually heat the oven at 25 degree less with a glass or ceramic pan... so again your saving lots of energy there," said Contesse.
