Florida Aquarium: ailing sea turtle has leak in lung

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -
A sick sea turtle, being cared for by the Florida Aquarium in Tampa has air bubbles in the airway passages to its lung's left side, indicating a leak from the lung according to Aquarium spokesperson Katherine Claytor.

The turtle named, "Freud" underwent a bronchoscopy and a CT scan on Tuesday. A bronchoshoscopy is a procedure where a camera is inserted down the turtle's windpipe.

The Florida Aquarium vet staff transported "Freud" to the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) on Tuesday for the procedures.

USF Health Director of Public Affairs Anne Baier said sea turtle experts will meet with human doctors and surgeons and match up the bronchoscopy and CT scan results and determine if there is a way to repair the problem.

"Freud" was transferred to The Florida Aquarium from the panhandle of Florida, where he was found floating and suffering from a possible tear in his lung. Unable to completely diagnose Freud's condition without sophisticated advanced imaging, The Florida Aquarium teamed up with the staff at the CAMLS facility to get a better look at his injuries and figure out the best course of action for his recovery.

The Florida Aquarium has partnered with USF because they say that sea turtles are a critical piece to the ocean's ecological system and play an important role in the health of our oceans.
