Owner to pay for crumbling Davis Islands mansion demolition

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - The City of Tampa's Director of Code Enforcement said Tuesday that the owner of the Davis Islands mansion in disrepair has agreed to pay for its demolition.

A special magistrate hearing the code enforcement case denied the appeal by the owners and ordered the building to be torn down in November.

Neighbors say the home has been an eyesore for years.  Javier Lescano says, "We're very happy, we're thrilled to death, some of the neighbors are gathering around. We're going to have a little champagne party when they bring in the wrecking ball."

Once electric and water connections are disconnected, the demolition should begin in a few weeks, Ruggiero said.

The city estimated the cost of demolishing the mansion at around $16,000, which also included fees that are only subject to the city and not the property owner, so it's likely below that amount.

Ruggiero added that a check for asbestos will be made inside the structure before it's torn down.

When the demolition occurs, Ruggiero said there won't be any asbestos hazards to neighbors, because he says he doesn't believe there is asbestos in the house. However, if it is found on the property, it'll be removed through a wet process, he explained.
