LARGO, FL (WFLA) - Ronald Bruinius, 36,  faced a judge Tuesday on a charge of sexual battery after his arrest Monday by Pinellas County Sheriff's detectives for assaulting a client.

Investigators say Bruinius "inappropriately touched" a 53-year-old female client July 24 at his business Ronnie's Body Work Massage located within the Artistic Expressions Day Spa at 10671 104th Ave. N. in Largo.

Investigators say the victim went to Bruinius for five sessions as part of a Groupon special.

The first two sessions were uneventful but the victim told investigators that Bruinius inappropriately touched her during her third visit to his office. The victim told investigators she didn't confront Bruinius at the time because she thought it was a mistake. But when the same thing happened during her 5th session, she ended the session and later contacted authorities.

A manager of the Spa where Bruinius worked said he was an independent contractor with a good work history. "I was taken aback because I personally do receive massages from Ron, I did, and he did help me," said Spa Manager Donna Mansbart.

Bruinius is currently in the Pinellas County Jail under a $50,000 bond set by a judge Tuesday. Bruinius told the judge he supports his ex-wife and two children on his $13/hour pay and has no money for a lawyer. She appointed a public defender.

Investigators say there may be other victims and are asking anyone with information to contact Pinellas Sheriff's Detective Guy Kirby of  the Special Victims Unit at (727)582-6200.

Bruinius has no prior criminal history but an Eight On Your Side news investigation last month revealed eight registered sex offenders who held state licenses in good standing despite their criminal records.

One of those offenders, Michael McIntosh, assaulted a painting 14 months ago under circumstances similar to the allegations in the Bruinius case. McIntosh surrendered his license the day after News Channel 8 broadcast a story about him. The state still hasn't officially revoked his license but may do so during a hearing Wednesday.

The other seven registered sex offenders still have clear and active licenses with the state with no complaints or discipline listed on the Florida Department of Health website.
