Cab driver found dead in car in Tampa

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Tampa police are investigating a mysterious homicide. A taxi cab driver was found dead inside of his vehicle. Tampa police say at around 7:45 Sunday night, a man was driving down Eskimo Avenue when he noticed a taxi cab parked near a vacant house.

Thinking that was very strange, police say the man approached the taxi.

Tampa police Lt. Richard O’Connor said, "As he approached the corner, he observed a taxi cab that was parked on the side of a property that was known to be a vacant house. He thought that was unusual so he actually got out and he was approaching the vehicle. And at that time he saw what appeared to be the driver of the vehicle was slumped over."

Tampa police were called and they discovered the driver had been shot and killed. The area was cordoned off and K-9 units responded.

Very few details were released at this time, and detectives are trying to learn whatever they can about this strange case.

"Homicide, once they got here, they actually took the scene and now they're garnering whatever information they can from any available people that were out here and I think they were limited as far as witnesses were concerned," Lt. O’Connor said.

Police will not release the identity of the taxi cab driver until the next of kin are notified. They have not commented at this time on why the taxi cab was in the area.
