SEMINOLE, FL (WFLA) -

A Bay area martial arts instruction facility held an anti-bullying/conflict resolution seminar Saturday morning in Seminole.

Dozens of kids took part in the event at MA Fitness on Seminole Blvd.

The educational exercise was free for boys and girls between the ages of seven and 14. The participants were instructed on various levels of bullying as well as proper responses in dealing with such issues.

The goal of the seminar was to empower children with knowledge on how to deal with bulling – verbal and physical taunting – in a non-violent manner. Lt. Ben McBride of the Clearwater Police Department and martial arts expert Jim Graden teamed up to work with the kids.

“Ben and I have talked about coming together to teach this type of program for a long time,” Graden said of Saturday’s event. “We feel that kids need a better understanding of their options when confronted by a bully and how to handle it.”

McBride, a 28-year-veteran with CPD, is currently a patrol commander. He is also a state certified Defensive Tactics and Close Quarters Combat instructor. Several months ago he was selected as a Big Brother of the Year recipient for 2013.

Graden, a world kickboxing champion and master martial artist, has taught martial arts to thousands of Bay area residents over the past three decades. He is also a co-owner of MA Fitness.

The two men hope to conduct similar seminars in the future, making them part of an on-going program that will provide youngsters with the proper information to combat bullies.
