OPELIKA, Ala. -

Lee County authorities are looking for a man who escaped from jail as he was being booked in Thursday.

Darrin Adams, 39, of Phenix City, escaped through a door while corrections officers were distracted, according to Lee County officials. Another inmate was being released at the time and there was a lot of activity in the booking area.

Adams was originally arrested for lying to an officer but was also wanted for a theft of property in 1997.

Phenix City and Columbus police are helping with the search. The public is asked to call police if they spot Adams.
