5th inmate this year dies in Washington County Detention Facility

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says a Johnson City woman died while awaiting transport to another facility.

According to Sheriff Ed Graybeal, 51-year-old Donna L. Patillo was brought into the detention facility at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday by the Johnson City Police Department.

She was held in booking – awaiting transport to Sumner County, TN on outstanding warrants for violation of probation.

Detention officers say they conducted hourly rounds on Patillo up to 4:43 p.m. When officers went to serve her a meal at 4:52 p.m., they found her slumped over and unconscious in her cell.

Patillo was taken to the Johnson City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office says Patillo has an extensive medical history and was prescribed several medications.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist with the probe into Patillo’s death.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office told News Channel 11 an autopsy will be performed Wednesday at ETSU Forensic Center determine her cause of death.

This is the fifth inmate to die in the detention facility this year. News Channel 11 is following this story.
