FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Six people had to be rescued from an early morning apartment fire in Fayetteville Wednesday.

The fire started around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Village of Cliffdale Apartments on Cutchen Lane.

Fire investigators on scene said fire was coming out of the roof area of a second floor balcony. They said the fire traveled up on the outside of the building and into the attic area.

Twelve of the 24 apartment units were damaged by the fire,  three sustaining significant damage and nine sustaining smoke and water damage.

Eleven units were occupied at the time of the fire and had to be evacuated. Six people had to be rescued. One woman was asleep and had to be woken up by firefighters.

None of the residents were hurt, but one firefighter suffered a shoulder injury.

Fire investigators believe the fire to be accidental, but a direct cause has not been determined at this time.

The Red Cross is assisting the 10 residents who were displaced from their homes and the apartment management staff is relocating seven residents due to lingering smoke odors.
