Pancake flipper gaining Internet fame

Posted: Updated:
ST LOUIS, MO (WFLA) - A St. Louis man has become an Internet sensation, thanks to his pancakes.

Dan Drake is a cook at the Courtesy Diner in South St. Louis.  He does more than just flip flapjacks:  Drake, aka "Doctor Dan the Pancake Man", is an artist of the griddle.

"A lot of times when folks request things, I'll draw myself a little helper," says Drake.

Drake makes pancakes in a variety of crazy shapes.  For example, he often gets requests for the St. Louis Blues hockey team logo, the blue note.  He can also make the mushroom from Super Mario Brothers, and even Grumpy Cat.

"There's an irony to the fact that it's my day job that's making me famous," Drake says.  He also works as an artist, musician, and rapper.

Any specialty pancake Drake makes has to be in reverse, so it looks right when he flips it over.

"A classic, or my classic anyway. It's easy because it's just big ol' dollops of batter. Whenever I serve a Mario pancake I go [makes video game noises] and then I walk back and finish cooking," laughs Drake.
