An elderly woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after Sarasota police say she drove her car into a canal.

Around 12:30 p.m., the woman was driving south of U.S. 41 in front of Sarasota High School.  Investigators say she lost control of the car, veered off the road, plowed through some bushes and into Hudson Bayou.

One lane of southbound U.S. 41 was shut down while a tow truck came to remove the car.  Witnesses who were driving behind the woman told officers she was swerving between lanes before the accident occurred.

Investigators have not released the woman's name, only that she suffered minor injuries, and was hospitalized.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
