Police identify woman found dead near ECU campus

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Detectives with the Greenville Police Department have identified a woman found dead near ECU's campus Tuesday.

Police say Janet Clair Hill, 66, was the woman found by an ECU Facilities Services worker behind Rite-Aid at the intersection of Charles and 14th Street.

Police believe that Hill was homeless, and autopsy showed she died of natural causes. They were able to track down her family in Norfolk, Va. and notify them of her death.

Greenville police are investigating the death of a woman after ECU employees discovered her body this morning behind a Rite-Aid Pharmacy.

9 On Your Side was the first news crew on the scene.

Greenville police got a call just after 11 a.m. about a body behind the Rite-Aid off 14th Street and Charles Boulevard. They taped off a wide area behind the pharmacy around some spots hidden by trees and bushes.

That’s where they say a woman's body was when an ECU Facilities Services worker found it. Police examined the scene for nearly three hours. They say it appears she's a middle-aged woman, but don't know her name yet.

Witnesses say they've seen her around the area before and some speculate she might be homeless.

"We talked to some people who have seen this lady around,” Sgt. Joe Friday says. “There are no obvious signs of foul play, but that's still being investigated."

Still, people were shaken up by the discovery.

"The guy I was with, he told me to come down here and there's a body over there,” says Brian Vilaro, an ECU freshman who was volunteering nearby. “So that's the last thing I expected, but it's kind of shocking."

Police say they don't know how long the body has been there. They have since sent it to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
