LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

A Lakeland couple died Saturday afternoon from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash in Lakeland.

Michael Stanley Cox, 48, and his wife, Yvette Marie Cox, 36, were pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Cox was operating the 2006 Ultra Classic Harley Davidson motorcycle on which the couple was traveling.

According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report the incident occurred in the 2100 block of Groveglen Lane and involved a Republic Services Inc. trash removal truck. The garbage truck, driven by 39-year-old Bobby Caswell of Brandon, had just finished picking up garbage in the Grove Glen West subdivision and was attempting to cross over Lakeland Highlands Road toward the Grove Glen East subdivision.

Mr. and Mrs. Cox were travelling south on Lakeland Highlands Road, after leaving the Publix Supermarket located in the Lake Miriam Plaza on South Florida Avenue on the Harley Davidson. The garbage trucked crossed Lakeland Highlands Road in front of the Harley Davidson.

It appears Mr. Cox attempted to take evasive action, however the motorcycle struck the driver's side door area of the garbage truck. The couple were not wearing helmets.

The road was closed for approximately three hours and 45 minutes as investigators collected information. No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
