ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Detectives with the St. Petersburg Police Department are asking for the public’s help in locating a hit and run driver.

Phelestine LaRose Smith died Friday night from injuries sustained during the incident that occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. She was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where she later died.

According to a St. Petersburg Police Department report Smith, 49, was walking east across 28th St. South in the 400 block when a small, four-door sedan struck her in the curb lane. The vehicle failed to yield to the pedestrian investigators say.

Smith was projected onto the car and fell onto the pavement following impact. The vehicle stopped briefly and then took off at a high rate of speed. It was last seen traveling west on 4th Ave. South.

The sedan is light-colored – possibly silver – and should have damage to the front end, hood and/or windshield. Smith’s daughters were with her at the hospital when she was pronounced dead.

If you have any information about this incident please contact SPPD at 727-893-7780.
