Audit reveals 6 Wayne Co. officers overpaid for 4 years

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A state audit shows the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice overpaid six officers from April 2008 to March 2012.

There were not special circumstances that forced the state to conduct an audit; it was completed as part of the state's auditor's office in an effort to periodically check and "report on the financial practices of state agencies."

However, during the audit, officials discovered possible mishandling of payroll over payments for six officers at Wayne Correctional Institute.

The audit revealed that the officers were overpaid by a total of $58,313. The audit shows that the officers were coded in BEACON as night shift workers when they should have been considered day shift workers. As a result, the officers were paid the premium rate of night shift officers.

The overpayments were discovered in March 2012 by a payroll technician. Beacon calculated the total overpayment as a little more than $58,000 however the division later calculated the amount to be $35,859 after giving the officers shift premium credit for some for the hours. But the state auditor's office said the officers were not eligible for those credits.
